Caribbean Exploration, Costa Rica

October 10 - 17, 2026

8 Days, 7 Nights

Afro-Costa Rican Roots is an 8-day, 7-night immersive travel program that takes outstanding high school students from Memphis on a transformative journey to one of the most culturally significant Afro-Caribbean regions in the Americas — and brings them home as leaders. Set along Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast through the communities of Tortuguero, Cahuita, and Puerto Viejo, students engage with living African diaspora history, work alongside conservation organizations, cook authentic Caribbean food, learn traditional Afro-Caribbean dance, and sit with indigenous leaders to understand what it means to protect culture, community, and land across generations.

Memphis Challenge believes that young people who know who they are, become leaders who know what to build — and this program is designed to deepen that identity, expand that vision, and send students back to Memphis with the confidence, global perspective, and sense of purpose needed to invest in the city they call home. This is not just a trip abroad. This is the foundation of the next generation of Memphis leaders.
